Learning to be a Writer
Today we began researching and collecting information regarding our animals to go into our park.
We learned that writers always have a plan to help them organize their information. You will see a picture of our planner below. If your child does some research at home that they would like to include on their planner, please just have them write it down on a separate sheet of paper.
3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Inquiry we talked about what we need for our park." A.B.
2. "In Science we did an experiment about which liquid would freeze first. Water froze first." "P.D.
Now our Science homework is, why did the water freeze first?
3. "In Writer's Workshop I found out what the food, enemies, and habitats for my animal in the park." A.H.
Reminders:
1. Last day to submit book orders is tomorrow, Thursday, October 10th.

Planning for our Park
1. "In Inquiry we picked animals and we are going to research them. These animals are going into our park." K.O.
2. "In Math we made growing patterns and had a problem. We didn't know who was right-Miss. Moore or Ms. Watts. Ms. Watts said "yes, the pictures are patterns." Miss. Moore said 'no, they aren't." A.H.
Please see below for some examples of growing patterns that we created this afternoon.
3. "In Music we learned a new game with dots. To play the game we put dots down on the floor for as many people that were playing." A.C.
Today we started really planning for our park. We each chose an animal that we are going to research to go into our park. We discussed the types of wildlife found in Calgary and then everyone got to choose one. We will be working on building our non-fiction writing skills through our animal research.

2. If you are able to help out one morning a week or every couple of weeks, we'd love to have some parent volunteers for our class. Please email Miss. Moore if you can help. It's approximately 20-30 minutes.

We've Got Important Work to Do!
3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Inquiry we decided what playground a new school should build. It helped us learn what the word optimal means." A.Z.
2. "In Math we made number patterns and we learned what the words core and element mean." A.B.
Parents-ask your child what these words mean!
3. "In Writer's Workshop we learned to make sentences more interesting for readers to read. We add more details." V.C.
Parents-we have been given a very important job. We need to design a new park in Calgary that will have some animals in it that we saw at Fish Creek Park and Prince's Island Park. We need to choose an animal to learn about. Ask your child which animal they want to research and become an expert at.We will share this project at our Celebration of Learning on October 25th.
Reminders:
1. Return Science Home Journals.
2. Scholastic Book orders due back no later than Thursday.

The Beginning of Science Home Journals!
3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Reader's Workshop we had color groups like green, blue, purple, red and orange. I did Read to Someone and Word Work." A.C.
2. "In our Science Home Journals we made a prediction of which liquid will freeze first. We had chocolate syrup, water, apple juice, ranch dressing, vinegar, milk and dish soap." A.H.
3. "In Inquiry we learned a new diagram called a Venn Diagram. In the Venn Diagram we got to choose which animal we wanted to put in the Prince's Island Park side that we did not see at Fish Creek Park. My animal was tracks of a duck." A.C.
We started our Science Home Journals. Parents have homework this weekend! You may notice that your child did not finish their prediction at school. Please give them time to finish this weekend.
