Testing our Insulators...what was the result?

Today we were introduced to the design cycle to help us as Scientists, understand the steps to follow when designing, building and testing our inventions. New vocabulary such as prototype was taught to help us understand that Scientists sometimes have to change an invention based on the results they get. We are hoping that the results of our experiment will help us make connections to our Science Home Journal problem for this weekend!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Science we finished building our creations to make sure animals stay warm. When we are finished we tested it with hot water to find out which one is going to be hot and which one is going to be cold." F.O.
2. "In Math we learned how to count down and then we had a problem. Each group got a problem to count and take away a certain item. Mine was the food bank stuff." A.D.
3. " In Gym we learned a new game with beachballs. One team had to throw the ball and the other team had to bump the ball back. We were trying to get points. The other game we played was we had 3 taggers. If you got tagged you had to freeze in the ready position for bumping." A.C.

Reminders:
1. STEM night on Thursday, December 5th starting at 6:00pm.
2. Fun Snack on Friday December 6th.
3. Cookie Dough orders coming Thursday, December 5th.
4. Continue to bring in food for the food bank.

Brother and Sister Number Sentences

Our Food Drive boxes have arrived! Over the next 3 weeks we will be collecting food to fill up our boxes. Students are encouraged to bring food to school to help support the Mayor's Food Drive for the 2019 Christmas season. Last year we filled 6 boxes. As a school our challenge is to fill up 7 boxes!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Writer's Workshop we learned the sound of the week is 'oo' (long sound) and 'oo' (short sound). AB.
2. "In Math we learned which number sentences are brothers and sisters." M.L.
3. "In Gym we learned how to play volleyball. We learned how to pass the volleyball. We learned bumping." D.T.

Challenge: What brother/sister number sentences can you create using 24?
Reminders:
1.Bring food for the food bank.
2. Fun lunch this week on Thursday.
3. STEM night next Thursday, December 5th.

Celebrating our Learning

Today we were presented with the question of "Are addition and subtraction connected?" We had a wide variety of responses, as you can see below! We are going to explore this idea further on Monday!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1.'"In Math  we were doing addition and subtracting and what is the same with subtracting and adding. My way was if you have a takeaway you can put a line up and down and you have a plus. If you have a plus, you can take away the up and down and then it makes a takeaway." A.B.
2. "In gym we played an island ball game, and we learned how to bump." M. C.
3. "In Writer's Workshop we learned a new detail that you put quotation marks when sometimes talking." -K. O.

My weekend challenge: Are there any animals that we would find in all 3 communities? (Saskatoon, Iqaluit, and Metegan?). If so, what animals are they?

I am looking forward to meeting with each one of you at our Student Learning Conversations over the next two days. Please email me or call the school if you need to make any changes.

Reminders:
1. No school tomorrow.
2. Cookie dough orders will arrive on Thursday, December 5th.

Student Learning Conversations

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Art I learned how to shade and do details on our sketches and everybody I think did really well." J.T.
2."In Math we did a problem where Miss. Krpan bought some things at 4 stores. You had to do 2 different and 2 the same." D.T.
3. "In Reader's Workshop we learned how to write letters. Mine was to Ms. B.B." A.D.

Today we chatted about Student Learning Conversations happening over the next couple of days. Miss. Krpan and I talked to students that we will be talking to parents about 4 areas: Literacy (reading and writing), Math and 2 other areas: Character and Citizenship. I would encourage you to bring your child to these Student Learning Conversations so they can be present when we celebrate their learning and also discuss areas for growth.

Reminders:
1. Half day tomorrow. Early dismissal at 12:30
2. STEM night at the school on December 5th. Stay tuned for further details.

A Day Out at Arts Commons

We had a great day at Arts Commons. For many of us, it was our first time to Arts Commons and we were in awe of the beautiful architecture inside the Jack Singer Concert Hall lobby.
We participated in 2 different workshops today. The first was presented by an Indigenous Educator, Chantel, who taught us many special medicines, traditions and stories of the Treaty 7 people.  The second workshop was taught by a local Calgary drama expert-Natalie. She was super fun and taught us many different ways to express ourselves through our voices, movements and expressions.
Here's some of our favourite parts and what we learned today:
1. "I learned a game where we said 'What's that?' and then we made stories from our actions." D.T.
2. "I learned with Chantel the 4 elements and that 4 is a special number and 3 new songs." F. O.
3."I learned  with Chantel some of the Blackfoot medicines and I learned how the Indigenous found their families and friends when it was dark." A.C.

Reminders:
1. Last day to return cookie orders is tomorrow.
2. Early dismissal on Thursday at 12:30.
3. If you haven't signed up for a Student Learning Conference, I only have times left on Friday.
