Grade 2 Learning Plan
Week 3
April 14-17, 2020
Here is your learning plan for next week. Please remember that your learning includes 5 hours of Literacy (Reading/Writing) and Math over the week, approximately 1 hour per day. Below is a sample schedule you can follow.
Learning Plan Overview:
Literacy: Informational Writing based on the question of ‘The best part of my community is_____’
Word Work: Mystery word
Math: Measurement
Personal Challenge: Organization
Staples: Setting, Yoga, Game
Bonus Activity: Offline Coding
This week you’ll notice that there are some instructional videos included in the learning tasks. Since all grade 2 students are doing the same tasks and we are working as a Grade 2 team, some of the videos may have another Grade 2 teacher.
*NEW* Please note our weekly class meet up is at 10:00am every Tuesday.
To book a 1 on 1 Learning Conference with your child’s teacher, please email
them directly to their CBE account. Learning conferences run everyday from
11am-2pm.

Learning Intentions:
Description:
This week you are helping a new family decide which community in Calgary they should live in. You are going to use our Inquiry question of “The best choice is _______ because…” Through becoming an informational writer, you will work on adding details and reasons to explain why a certain place or object makes your community the best place to live.
You will be using pictures and learning to write a short paragraph in your writing.
You will also be starting your new Mystery Word Work! By creating different words, can you create the mystery word, and figure out the sound of the week?
Task 1: (You can choose break up this task over different days)
Challenge:
Write about more than 1 object/place in your community to create several different paragraphs.
Modification:
If you are unable to go outside for a walk, choose a different place (such as in your house) and find things, places or people that make it the ‘best place to live’.
Assessment:
What are the differences between a 1 ⭐ and a 3 ⭐⭐⭐?
Task 2:
Attached below are the letters you need to use to figure out the Mystery Word and the Sounds of the Week.
You can either print off the sheets (found in our Google Classroom) or copy the letters into a notebook.
Give yourself another pat on the back! All done!

Math
| |||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Intention:
Description:
This week we are going to continue to practice using non-standard units of measure and we will understand what the metric system is and begin to identify standard units of measure around our house!
Task:
Tuesday
1.Watch video of non-standard unit measure tips
2. Measurement Tag!
Basically you grab any rectangular surface, and 12 basic lego bricks (or any other connecting toy) and a set of two dice. Students begin in opposite corners. One is “IT” and the other is trying to not get tagged. Whoever rolls highest becomes “IT”. The not “IT” player starts first.
Every time a student rolls, they combine their dice and that is how many unit they can move in any direction. Their lines can cross as many times as needed, but the tagger only succeeds when they “catch” their partner at their latest stopping point.
Add all your measurements at the end!
Take a picture and submit it when you are done!
Watch the video to see how to play! You can access the instructional video in Google Classroom.
Wednesday
Make your own ruler.
You can access the ruler attachment and instructional video in Google Classroom.
Show how Sid uses inches because he is from the USA. But in Canada we use the metric system.
Metric system video.
Thursday
4. Play measurement tag using new ruler instead of lego. Measure in centimeters(cm). Add all your measurements at the end.
You can access the instructional video in Google Classroom.
Friday
5. Metric system scavenger hunt
You can access the instructional video in Google Classroom.
Look for items around your house that use the metric system to measure.
Upload a photo of your work to math assignment on week 3.

Personal Challenge
| |||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Intention:
Description:
This week’s challenge is focused on organization. Take a moment to walk around your house, noting the spaces you feel could be organized. Some ideas could be your bookshelf, sock drawer, cutlery drawer,or even the classic “junk” drawer.
Task:

Staples (Optional)
| |||||||||||||||||||||
Remember these Staples are like a ‘bonus’ to your day. They are to help add some fun and to develop skills that you may not do at school. Here’s some ideas on what to do this week: Try to do at least 30 minutes of the Staples each day

Bonus Activity (Optional)
| |||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Intention:
Description:
Sounds easy enough, right? You may find it is a little more challenging than you thought to give exact instructions in this offline coding challenge. The person giving instructions acts as the “programmer”, giving step-by-step instructions to the drawer who is the “robot” on the steps to do a simple drawing (ex. butterfly). This activity challenges us to exercise our computational thinking, a skill that experienced coders use all of the time!

Extensions:
If you are comfortable with the challenge, here are some extensions that could make it more challenging.
