Boat Testing Day!

Today we finished building our boats and were ready to test them! This happened after we tested various materials this week and decided the materials you see in the picture were the best materials to design a boat from. Our boats are currently floating in our water table to see which boat is able to float the longest before it capsizes or sinks. We will find out on Monday the result of our experiment!

Reminders:
1. Volunteer Tea next week. If you have not yet R.S.V.P.'d please let the office know.

How many apples?

Today our morning Math problem was a story about apples:
 Lucy had ____ apples.
She has 9 less apples than Marcus.
How many apples did Marcus have?

This problem was challenging for many of us. However, once we remembered our new strategy of C.U.B.E.S. many of us were able to figure out a possible solution.

I encourage you to ask your child about the C.U.B.E.S. strategy and practice it using various number based problems at home.

Reminder:
1. Pearce Estate Park field study on June 5th.
2. Heritage Park field study on June 19th. If you are volunteering and have an annual pass to the park please let Miss. Moore know.

Documenting our Calgary Wonders

Today we talked about the difference between an opinion and a fact. We used our own ideas to draw pictures of what we believed Calgary looked like 100 years ago. Then we compared our drawings to archived photos to see how our first ideas changed or stayed the same. Some of the things we noticed in the real photographs was that there was only 1 main bridge, the towers/buildings were much smaller and we didn't see any cars, just horses and carriages.

Tomorrow we are headed back to the Weaselhead. We will be in the forest and near the water to explore the question of 'What Lives Here?' Today we talked about what to do to protect ourselves from insects and ticks that we may come across. There are two things we are encouraged to do to be prepared to learn in the wooded and water areas:
1. Wear bug spray (please note that students can bring their own bug spray but must apply it themselves)
2. Wear long sleeves and pants to cover my skin. Or wear layers.
Please talk to your child tonight about how to protect themselves for tomorrow.

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. " In Social Studies  we learned a couple of wonders that people had about Calgary. For example, mine was 'why does the Calgary Tower light up at night?' and we drew pictures of what we think it looked like in the past and on the back we had to do 3 things we learned about the past from two pictures on Mr. D.D." N.G.
2. " In Math we learned to use pictures, a number sentence that matches your sentence when we're solving problems. For example using you can draw a circle and put a 10 in the middle if you don't want to draw 50 or 100 circles." O.S.
3. "In Reader's Workshop I learned a blend sound. For example one of them was 'oa' and one of them was 'igh'." C.S.

Reminders:
1. We are coming up with things we would like to learn about Calgary. Some of us have come up with a question to research. If you have not decided on something you would like to learn about Calgary, talk to your Mom and Dad tonight about what you would like to find out.
2. School wide photo this Thursday morning. Nothing needed-just your smile!
