Testing our Insulators...what was the result?

Today we were introduced to the design cycle to help us as Scientists, understand the steps to follow when designing, building and testing our inventions. New vocabulary such as prototype was taught to help us understand that Scientists sometimes have to change an invention based on the results they get. We are hoping that the results of our experiment will help us make connections to our Science Home Journal problem for this weekend!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Science we finished building our creations to make sure animals stay warm. When we are finished we tested it with hot water to find out which one is going to be hot and which one is going to be cold." F.O.
2. "In Math we learned how to count down and then we had a problem. Each group got a problem to count and take away a certain item. Mine was the food bank stuff." A.D.
3. " In Gym we learned a new game with beachballs. One team had to throw the ball and the other team had to bump the ball back. We were trying to get points. The other game we played was we had 3 taggers. If you got tagged you had to freeze in the ready position for bumping." A.C.

Reminders:
1. STEM night on Thursday, December 5th starting at 6:00pm.
2. Fun Snack on Friday December 6th.
3. Cookie Dough orders coming Thursday, December 5th.
4. Continue to bring in food for the food bank.

Celebrating our Learning

Today we were presented with the question of "Are addition and subtraction connected?" We had a wide variety of responses, as you can see below! We are going to explore this idea further on Monday!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1.'"In Math  we were doing addition and subtracting and what is the same with subtracting and adding. My way was if you have a takeaway you can put a line up and down and you have a plus. If you have a plus, you can take away the up and down and then it makes a takeaway." A.B.
2. "In gym we played an island ball game, and we learned how to bump." M. C.
3. "In Writer's Workshop we learned a new detail that you put quotation marks when sometimes talking." -K. O.

My weekend challenge: Are there any animals that we would find in all 3 communities? (Saskatoon, Iqaluit, and Metegan?). If so, what animals are they?

I am looking forward to meeting with each one of you at our Student Learning Conversations over the next two days. Please email me or call the school if you need to make any changes.

Reminders:
1. No school tomorrow.
2. Cookie dough orders will arrive on Thursday, December 5th.

3. "In Reader's Workshop we learned how to write letters. Mine was to Ms. B.B." A.D.

Today we chatted about Student Learning Conversations happening over the next couple of days. Miss. Krpan and I talked to students that we will be talking to parents about 4 areas: Literacy (reading and writing), Math and 2 other areas: Character and Citizenship. I would encourage you to bring your child to these Student Learning Conversations so they can be present when we celebrate their learning and also discuss areas for growth.

A Day Out at Arts Commons

We had a great day at Arts Commons. For many of us, it was our first time to Arts Commons and we were in awe of the beautiful architecture inside the Jack Singer Concert Hall lobby.
We participated in 2 different workshops today. The first was presented by an Indigenous Educator, Chantel, who taught us many special medicines, traditions and stories of the Treaty 7 people.  The second workshop was taught by a local Calgary drama expert-Natalie. She was super fun and taught us many different ways to express ourselves through our voices, movements and expressions.
Here's some of our favourite parts and what we learned today:
1. "I learned a game where we said 'What's that?' and then we made stories from our actions." D.T.

The Importance of Hand Washing

Today we had our School nurse, "nurse Jess", visit us to talk to students about handwashing. We all shook hands with our peers to see how quickly the germs spread. Afterwards we all washed our hands, however we were shocked when Nurse Jess, used a special light which revealed how many germs were still left behind! Nurse Jess helped us realize the importance of ensuring we doing forget about our nails, thumbs and also how drying our hands using paper towels helps to remove any germs still on our hands.

We are off to Arts Commons tomorrow! Stay tuned for some great photos!

Reminders;
1. Please ensure your child has a water bottle for tomorrow's field study. Apparently there are few water fountains at the site.
2. Student Learning Conferences this Thursday and Friday.
