The Cookie Fiasco

Today we read a story called 'The Cookie Fiasco'. It presented the problem of having 6 cookies which had to be divided between the four characters. How could they figure out how to scare this evenly?
Thankfully the story had a happy ending!
Then we were presented with the story of having to share 6 cookies amongst a girl Katarina, a boy Logan and ourself. However, the problem is that Katrina can only have 1 cookie. How will we share the cookies?
I encourage you to discuss how they would solve this. We will continue to work on solving this tomorrow.

Same, same but different

Today we read a story called 'Same, same but Different' by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw. It looked at 2 friends from different parts of the world and what was the same between them and what was different. We learned today that we are going to be getting letters from some kids in another part of the world. We are excited!

We also looked at the word estimation and what it means. We have a question for you Mom and/or Dad:
"Do you use estimating in your job?" If so, how?

A Sick Patient!

Today we had a sick patient in Room 2! Different groups of students created a 'sick patient' of one of their classmates. Using visuals and text, students had to create someone who answered these 3 questions:
1. What do you look like when you're sick?
2. What do you wear when you are sick?
3. What do you sound like when you are sick?

We then did a gallery walk and recorded some of our observations. It was easy to see or hear that someone is sick, but can you see what's happening inside?

Today we learned that when our body is healthy the temperature is 37.5 d

3 Things We Learned Today
1. "In Science we learned about germs and what happens to our body when we get sick." M.S.
2. "In Math we got a new math problem. It's about Hannah and Avery baking 45 cookies. " D.G. "It was a backwards problem." S.C.
3. "In Writer's Workshop we learned what to do after you edit your story." D.T.

What is that?

Today we began our sketching of our artifacts. We got to carefully observe one of the artifacts brought in by our peers. We guessed the name of our artifact, what the job of it was, and then draw a picture of it. We will be practicing this all week with the artifacts. Please feel free to continue sending them in!

Measuring our Clay Animals

This afternoon we finally got to test out our devices to move our animals from Meteghan to another part of Canada. In order to save our clay sculptures (in case of an accident on the device) we substituted rocks for our animal. We had to use balance scales to figure out how many rocks it took to equal the weight of our animal.

1."In Science we learned what a Scientist does on GoNoodle and in part 2 we wrote hypotheses for an experiment we will do tomorrow." S.M.
2. "In Inquiry we  tested our animals on our movement devices." L.S.
3. "In Music we learned a new song called Night Song." C.S.

I have 2 clues about our guest speaker tomorrow. They will be teaching us about this animal:
1. This animal lives in Alberta.
2. This animal does NOT fly south in the winter.

Homework:
Find something from the past (hopefully older than 1980!) to share with students. It's okay (even better!) if you don't know what the name of your artifact is and the purpose of it.
Please bring to school in the next couple of days with your name on it.

Reminders:
1. We require 8 volunteers to go to Ann and Sandy Cross on January 24th. Please email me if you can help out!
2. Book orders due back no later than Thursday, January 17th.

What is an iron for?

Today we were comparing hot and cold objects in our environment. We learned what language Scientists use when comparing two objects (i.e. _____ is hotter than _______).
