Happy Halloween!

It was great fun in Room 2 today-Mary Poppins came to visit! We had a lot of fun with Ms. Poppins. She talked with a funny accent and said some interesting words, but nonetheless we had an exciting day of learning.
One of our activities was reading the story Room on the Broom. We then had to design a broom for the witch and her animals.

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Math we continued our aquarium problem today." V.C.
2. "In Gym we learned some new games. The first game was Zombie tag, then it was blob tag. The last game was called Halloween signals." A.C.
3. "In Science we learned that if we did not have a skull, our brain would not be protected and then we did an activity where we got to make a paper skull mask. Then we got to decorate it. " A.D.

1. I would love some more volunteers for the zoo. If you can help out please email me!
2. Please remember to send your child's home folder back to school. I haven't seen some home folders in weeks! it helps to keep important papers together.
3. Please return home reading. Some of us haven't gotten our stickers for exchanging books in a long time.

Measuring and Recording Temperatures

3 Things We Learned About Today:

Ecosystem Engineers



We had a great time at Telus Spark today. Part of our time was spent in the Ecosystems Engineer Program. We learned what the word 'ecosystem' meant and went to explore a secret ecosystem right at Telus Spark!

3 Things We Learned About Ecosystems today:
1. "I learned that there about 1 million blood vessels in a dog bodies and a bunnies brain is so small; about the size of an eraser." A.H.
2. "Me and my group learned that white tailed Jackrabbits make a cave underground." J.T.
3. "Today I saw a lot of different shaped bones. A lot of long bones and short bones in animals and humans." A.B.

Reminders:
1. Halloween: I can wear my costume in the morning. No masks, weapons or gore. Please do not send candy to school.

Learning About Landforms

Today we began an exploration of what the word 'landform' means. We looked at a large picture of Calgary and identified all the different landforms we saw. We learned that trees, bushes and plants are actually not a landform in and of itself, but may be found within a specific landform (i.e. a tree on a plain). We will begin comparing landforms to 3 other Canadian Communities as part of our Social Studies learning.

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Gym we played Simon Says and I think about half the class got out. We learned shooting and passing while shooting. We were trying to get it on the dot." M.C.
2. "In Music we learned how to play a new game Match the rhythm with the pumpkin. We also learned a song called 'The Cat Came Back." A.D.
3. "In Science we had an experiment, what is the temperature for cold, warm and hot water. Some of us had some right hypotheses, and some of us didn't have all of it right." K.O.

Reminders:
1. On our trip to Telus Spark we will be spending sometime outside. Dress for the weather as we will be outside for 30 minutes.
2. We can dress up for Halloween on Thursday. We can wear our costumes to school because the parade is in the morning. No masks or weapons.

Putting on the Finishing Touches

Tomorrow is our big day! We can wear our fancy clothes tomorrow if we would like.

1. "In Math Workshop some of us finished our pattern fish and our options were Math games, Math Task, Teacher Time and On Your Own." H.B.

2. "In Gym we played Shark attack and we had a relay race that we had to pass the basketball." P.D.

Getting Ready for our Exhibit

Today's blog is brought to you by Miss. Moore. We had such a busy day that before we knew it, it was 3:25!
 We had a great time practicing our presentations with our big buddies today. We discussed beforehand possible questions that we may get asked. We talked about how to appropriately talk to a guest. We also received feedback from our big buddies to help us improve for Friday.

We Chose A Name for Our Park!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Writer's Workshop we continued or finished our brochures, our posters or our books." A.C.

Preparing our Park

This afternooon as we were building and preparing our park for Friday's Celebration of Learning, we also learned the word cooperation and how to work as a team. We talked about what we should see and hear if we know that a team is working effectively together. Sometimes this may involve compromise, and at other times, it may involve coming up with a new idea.

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Math Workshop  we learned the synonym to switch. The synonym is translate. We had a pattern and we had to translate it. The pattern was flower, flower, bird, leaf." A.C.
2. "In Music we learned how to play a new game called Pass the Pumpkin." A.D.
3. "In Gym we played a new game called Knock Out. You need a basketball and start dribbling with some partners. You're trying to knock their ball away without your ball running away from you." K. O.

Follow Your Passion Friday is Back!

1. "In our Science Home Journals we got a problem that there are lumberjacks are cutting down trees in Fish Creek Park. We are trying to solve the problem of keeping our animals warm in the winter and cool in the summer." A.C.

Learning to be a Writer

Today we began researching and collecting information regarding our animals to go into our park.
We learned that writers always have a plan to help them organize their information. You will see a picture of our planner below. If your child does some research at home that they would like to include on their planner, please just have them write it down on a separate sheet of paper.

Planning for our Park

1. "In Inquiry we picked animals and we are going to research them. These animals are going into our park." K.O. 
2. "In Math we made growing patterns and had a problem. We didn't know who was right-Miss. Moore or Ms. Watts. Ms. Watts said "yes, the pictures are patterns." Miss. Moore said 'no, they aren't." A.H.

3. "In Music we learned a new game with dots. To play the game we put dots down on the floor for as many people that were playing." A.C.

Today we started really planning for our park. We each chose an animal that we are going to research to go into our park. We discussed the types of wildlife found in Calgary and then everyone got to choose one. We will be working on building our non-fiction writing skills through our animal research.

We've Got Important Work to Do!

1. "In Inquiry we decided what playground a new school should build. It helped us learn what the word optimal means." A.Z.

Parents-we have been given a very important job. We need to design a new park in Calgary that will have some animals in it that we saw at Fish Creek Park and Prince's Island Park. We need to choose an animal to learn about. Ask your child which animal they want to research and become an expert at.We will share this project at our Celebration of Learning on October 25th.

The Beginning of Science Home Journals!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Reader's Workshop we had color groups like green, blue, purple, red and orange. I did Read to Someone and Word Work." A.C.
2. "In our Science Home Journals we made a prediction of which liquid will freeze first. We had chocolate syrup, water, apple juice, ranch dressing, vinegar, milk and dish soap." A.H.
3. "In Inquiry we learned a new diagram called a Venn Diagram. In the Venn Diagram we got to choose which animal we wanted to put in the Prince's Island Park side that we did not see at Fish Creek Park. My animal was tracks of a duck." A.C.

We started our Science Home Journals. Parents have homework this weekend! You may notice that your child did not finish their prediction at school. Please give them time to finish this weekend. Then it's your turn to respond! We are really focusing on building our hypotheses' using the key words of I think and because.

Prince's Island Park Field Study Day!

 We had a fantastic morning at Prince's Island Park.

Here are some new things we discovered and learned at Prince's Island Park today:
1. "We discovered a new secret path. It was by the bridge and it had 3 or 4 different paths to go and one led to the river and we found some beaver signs. We found a tree that fell over." K.O.
2."We discovered some fur and we are not sure what it comes from but it was dead. It looked like a rabbit." A.C.

      3. "We discovered a beaver dam by the river." A.D.
4. "At Prince's Island Park we discovered lots of different footprints." V.C.

Experimenting with Hot and Cold

1. "In Science we did four experiments. We learned that when  you heat a candle it will turn into a puddle of wax. When you heat a marshmallow and it catches on fire it turns black." R.L.

What is the fastest number?

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Math we learned how to play a new game called Pyramid. We also had a count to 100 race and 10s was the fastest way to count out of 5s and 2s." A.D.
2. "In Science we wrote what we think is going to happen a balloon if we fill it up with water and put it in the freezer and what will happen if we light a candle." H.B.
3. "In Writer's Workshop we wrote what was the same in all non-fiction books. Non fiction books have a table of contents, labels, and a map." A.H.  Some of us are now writing a piece of non fiction using some of these important features.
