What's the story behind our flag?

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Inquiry we looked at flags and we tried to figure out what the story behind the flag was. Iqaluit had an Inukshuk and a star." O.C.
2."In Inquiry we learned about Inukshuks. They are signs for rivers and for homes. You don't use glue or tape. They just balance together so they won't fall over." A.C.
3. "In Read Aloud we found out that Wilbur got a reward from the judges." A.D.

Today we learned about the meaning of the Inukshuk on the Nunavut flag. We then read a great story called the Lonely Inukshuk, which was written by students at a school in Nunavut!
We were then challenged to create our own Inukshuks using a variety of materials from the classroom. Enjoy some of our creations below!

Homework Challenge: What's the story behind the Alberta flag? Write down your answers and bring them in tomorrow to share!

2. Fun lunch on Thursday.
3. We will be watching the Charlotte's Web movie sometime this week. If you don't want your child to watch the movie please let me know.

The Grade 4 Science Fair!

Today we got the pleasure of visiting the Grade 4 Science Fair. These are some of our favorite inventions/devices:
1.  "My favorite invention was the one that pulled up a Barbie and put it in it's bed from it's wheelchair" M.C.
2. "My favorite invention was the Sled Puller because it has a hook and it pulls up sleds because kids can sometimes have temper tantrums of getting too tired. There was cork that turns the paper towel tube and it pulls the string and then it pulls up the sled. I got to try turning the cork" K.O.
3. "My favorite invention was a machine that picked up garbage and I also got to try it." A.D.

At each station we asked the Grade 4 inventor the following:
a) What was your problem?
b) What did you invent to fix the problem

We saw some great inventions to fix simple everyday problems. :)

Reminders:
1. We can still bring food to donate on Monday to the food bank.
2. Fun sock day on Monday.
3. Carolling starts on Monday at 9:30am.

The Great Liquid Race!

What does the role of snow play in a community? This is one of our important questions we explored this afternoon. If Saskatoon has snow, why don't they build igloos? I'd encourage you to have a conversation with your child at home around their thoughts with these questions.

We also constructed an important tool used by the Inuit people because snow is so important in their community. What is it? You'll have to ask!

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Science we had a liquid race. The water won and glue lost." M.L.
2. "In Math we made paper Christmas trees. They are special because I used links to measure to the paper to make the Christmas tree." A.B.
3. "In Read Aloud we made it to chapter 20. The Zuckerman's are going to the judges booth because they I think they won second prize." F.O.

Reminders:
1. Wednesday, December 18th is wear green and red day!
2. Booster Juice fun snack tomorrow.

Fun in the Snow!

Today was all about snow! We had a lot of fun going outside to 'build' our Olaf, brining him inside to measure and then re-measuring after 1 hour to see how effective our devices were. Many of us were successful. Now the question is what made my insulation device
While we were waiting for Olaf to melt/not melt we attempted to build our own igloos. It proved to be harder than we first thought! I encourage you to have a conversation with your child around what worked well and what they found challenging.

3 Things We Learned About Today:
1. "In read aloud if we finish Charlotte's web on Monday we get to watch the movie Tuesday and Wednesday. In the book Wilbur got called to see the judges." M.L.
2. " In Science we finished building our creations so Olaf doesn't melt. My Olaf stayed the same after 1 hour. " K.O.
3. "In Social Studies we went outside and built igloos. The easiest part was the circle base. The hardest part was the stacking and getting it to stay; the roof too. Our group needed 2 more flat blocks and it could've been finished." A.C.

Reminders:
1. Please try to bring some more food in for our food bank. We have 4 more boxes to fill to reach our goal.
2. Tuesday, December 17th is Ugly or Cozy Sweater day! Find your favourite sweater to wear. :)

Monday News

This week we will be focusing on learning in Math around identifying objects by both shape and geometric name. Lots of us are learning new names like rectangular prism, cylinder, pyramid and cone.

We are also deepening our understanding of how the procedure Scientists use when developing a new device or invention. Today we focused on explaining the reasons behind why we chose the materials we did for our device. we are working on using connections and past knowledge/facts about a certain material to make our reasoning stronger. Tomorrow we will be building our devices and on Wednesday we will be testing them out!

Reminders:
1. Book orders due no later than tomorrow
2. Carolling/Talent Show next week.
3. No school Friday, December 20th.

Using our Food Bank for Learning!

We are focusing on how to make a reasonable estimates. Using our observations and using other important information will help us make a reasonable estimate. We are trying really hard to not count each object when making an estimate, which is proving to be very difficult! We will be using our Food Bank items to really help us with our learning this week. :)

3 Things We Learned Today:
1. "In Math we learned about how to make a reasonable estimate for the food in the Food Bank boxes and then we counted the food to get the actual amount." P.D.
2. "In Science we learned that scientists use reasoning to explain why D.T.'s group was the best insulator." A.H.
We are working on explaining why something happened in Science based on what we know and what we know about a topic.
3."In Inquiry we sorted the animals lived in Meteghan, Saskatoon, and Iqaluit and we played a Canadian game on our laptops." K.O.

Reminders:
1. Keep bringing food in. We only have 2 more weeks to fill 7 boxes!
